To the editor: Visitor contributors Huriya Jabbar and Alvin Makori make strong factors that closures and consolidations of faculties typically trigger schooling fairness points and that closures don’t essentially get monetary savings for districts in the long run (“If LAUSD must consolidate schools, it should also integrate them,” Oct. 24). These warnings are borne out by so many communities outraged to lose their alma mater and their neighborhood college asset to some advisor’s advice or a college board elected for 4 years and a superintendent who seemingly is just not from the communities.
The op-ed misses the chance to spotlight the asset that small faculties can deliver to communities that always lack parks, cultural venues, recreation and sporting services, well being facilities and different alternatives. Succesful city planners would by no means make the choice between closing/consolidating faculties or operating small faculties such a false dichotomy. By the best way, small faculties tend to have larger pupil achievement and dad or mum perceptions of faculty security.
Los Angeles Unified is at present dropping round 110,000 students to impartial, protected constitution faculties. Our metropolitan space boasts USC, UCLA, Caltech, Pomona School, Cal State L.A., Cal State Northridge and different establishments which have city planning professors and graduate college students, in addition to structure and design professors. Many of those lecturers and college students grew up in L.A. and L.A. faculties and will give us extra considerate, inventive and enriching concepts for public property. Let’s not solely look to Brooklyn or Charlotte, N.C., when we have now extra inventive expertise in L.A.
