    Venezuela’s political transition talks wrap first day in Caracas

    CARACAS: US-backed political transition talks between Venezuela’s interim authorities and opposition representatives started on Thursday (Aug 6) in Caracas, an AFP photographer in attendance noticed.

    The talks are going down seven months after US forces seized President Nicolas Maduro and as interim chief Delcy Rodriguez governs underneath Washington’s watchful eye.

    Venezuelans are hopeful the dialogue will finally pave the way in which for holding elections within the crisis-hit South American nation.

    Notably absent from the talks is opposition favorite and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado, who lives in exile and was not invited to affix the dialogue.

    The opposition is as a substitute being represented by Dinorah Figuera, who returned to Venezuela from exile on Wednesday.

    Figuera heads the opposition bloc that gained a majority within the 2015 Nationwide Meeting, the final legislature elected in a vote extensively recognised by the worldwide neighborhood.

    Nationwide Meeting President Jorge Rodriguez, who’s the interim chief’s brother, is in the meantime representing the federal government.
