WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Friday (Jul 24) threatened to hit the European Union with tariffs and a proper commerce investigation over Brussels’ newest antitrust penalty in opposition to Google.
In a put up on his Reality Social platform, Trump stated the bloc “can pay a really large value for this unlawful and extremely unethical conduct, which I’ve constantly warned them about”.
He stated he would “instantly provoke a 301 Investigation” into what he known as the EU’s observe of “ROBBING” American firms, and stated he anticipated a “substantial TARIFF” on the bloc “on the earliest attainable second.”
“The US of America will not be a ‘PIGGYBANK’ for Europe, nor will we permit it to be,” he wrote.
Part 301 of the 1974 Commerce Act permits Washington to probe overseas practices it deems discriminatory and retaliate with tariffs.
The European Fee on Thursday fined Google 890 million euros (US$1 billion) for breaching the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the bloc’s landmark regulation policing the conduct of dominant on-line platforms.
It was the primary penalty imposed on the corporate beneath the laws.
