The highest Democrat on the Home Judiciary Committee on Sunday blasted the potential fund to compensate allies of President Donald Trump, calling it a “political slush fund” that he stated is “unlawful” and “unconstitutional.”

“Solely Congress has the ability to applicable cash, and Congress by no means voted on creating this $1.7 billion political slush fund on the Division of Justice, and Congress would by no means move that,” stated Rep. Jamie Raskin, the committee’s rating member, in an interview with ABC Information’ “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos.

“That is simply an invention on his half, however even when Congress wished to do it, I feel it is clearly unconstitutional on quite a few grounds,” he added.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., seems on ABC Information’ “This Week” on Could 17, 2026.

    ABC Information

ABC Information reported Thursday that Trump is predicted to drop his $10 billion lawsuit towards the Inside Income Service in trade for the creation of the $1.776 billion fund for use to provide settlements to people who declare they had been wrongfully focused by the Biden administration, sources accustomed to the matter stated.

“We all know that the president needs to maintain organising these political slush funds,” Raskin stated. “All of that is outdoors of the Structure. All of it’s outdoors of congressional spending energy, and so it’s unlawful. It’s unconstitutional.”

A fee overseeing the compensation fund would have complete authority to settle claims, which could possibly be introduced by the practically 1,600 people charged in connection to the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol and entities related to Trump himself.

Raskin stated that compensating the now-pardoned Jan. 6 rioters could be a violation of the Fourteenth Modification.

“For those who take a look at Part 4 of the Fourteenth Modification, it says that no cash may be spent by the federal authorities for the needs of paying for rebellion or revolt. So, to the extent that he needs to provide one million {dollars} to every of 1,600 pardoned rioters and insurrectionists, we expect that that is an unconstitutional use of cash,” Raskin stated.

Raskin referred to as on Congress to cease the fund from shifting ahead.

Requested by Stephanopoulos whether or not Democrats would file lawsuits as effectively, Raskin stated, “Undoubtedly, we are going to.”

“However bear in mind, we’re the Article I department. We have now the ability over spending, and so we have now to say our spending energy to dam this,” he stated. “If our Republican colleagues have any respect for the Structure and the powers of Congress, they may transfer to dam it.”
