To the editor: Columnist Jackie Calmes’ recollections — with inspiration stemming from the latest memorial for the now-deceased longtime chair of the Federal Reserve, Republican Alan Greenspan — is a tribute to all these former officers who labored for the general public good (“A visit to Greenspan’s Washington and the era of getting things done,” Oct. 1). That they had the competence and braveness to do the correct factor with each events working collectively, one thing completely lacking from the present authorities of the USA.
My mom, who died in 2017 at 105 years outdated, was a lifelong full-fledged Democrat. Nonetheless, throughout her life I heard her praise Republicans together with Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan. For instance, she remarked in regards to the potential of Reagan to take a seat down with Tip O’Neill, Democratic speaker of the Home on the time, and work out compromise laws. Regardless of Watergate, my mom was impressed by a few of the laws Nixon supported that was properly thought-out and benefited People.
My mom didn’t reside to see what’s going on now. That might be a blessing in view of the present administration characterised by lies, incompetence and self-motivated aggrandizement and with a Republican Social gathering ignoring the quite a few grounds to question the president and proper his wrongdoings, together with what are doubtless violations of constitutional legislation.
