To the editor: It was good to learn that the governor is “getting ready for this El Niño early as a result of each Californian deserves to be protected of their residence, related to their neighborhood, and guarded when extreme climate comes” (“California declares statewide emergency ahead of projected epic El Niño storms,” Sept. 21). Nonetheless, the article accommodates nothing about Californians who haven’t any residence to be protected in. All preparations described concentrate on preserving the shoreline, property and transportation; none on discovering and equipping buildings to perform as shelter for 182,000 unhoused Californians throughout the days and weeks of predicted exhausting rain.

The intense climate shelters that used to exist all through Los Angeles have all however disappeared, and the 211 system doesn’t work as a result of there may be nowhere to ship individuals after the primary hour or so. Will we be lowered to accumulating and distributing ponchos and tents within the bleak hope that they’ll scale back shivering, sickness and loss of life?

Please, California and Los Angeles, get to work now to guard not solely property however hundreds of unhoused lives.
