    23 states urge Congress to regulate AI, warn of risks to national security and infrastructure

    Almost two dozen states are calling on Congress to control synthetic intelligence, warning that unchecked growth may put People and the nation in danger.

    The attorneys common of 23 states, together with the District of Columbia and American Samoa, signed a letter to congressional leaders Thursday demanding “complete federal regulation and security protocols” for AI.

    “Latest developments present that unchecked AI endangers People and will quickly threaten our monetary system, vital infrastructure, and nationwide safety,” the letter mentioned. “Though we’re working to carry frontier AI labs accountable underneath current state legal guidelines, federal oversight is urgently wanted to forestall future disasters.”

    The attorneys common cited latest incidents involving AI, together with studies involving Hugging Face, as proof of what they described because the dangers of AI techniques working past their supposed safeguards.

    The states referred to as for federal oversight of AI mannequin security testing, worldwide cooperation to tempo AI development and leaders empowered to make safer selections “unburdened by revenue maximization,” in accordance with the letter.

    “In latest weeks, alarming studies of AI brokers breaking containment have shocked the nation,” New York Lawyer Basic Letitia James mentioned. “My colleagues and I are calling on Congress to behave swiftly to ascertain a regulatory framework for AI growth to make sure this doesn’t proceed.”

    The letter comes as states and the federal authorities proceed to debate how AI needs to be regulated, together with the suitable stability between federal oversight and state authority.

    Along with New York, the attorneys common of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin signed the letter, together with the District of Columbia and American Samoa.
