To the editor: The protection of the property insurance coverage disaster highlights a devastating actuality: Nationwide insurance coverage giants are abandoning California households (“California’s property insurance deserts are spreading to low-risk fire areas,” Sept. 20). Conveniently, these mega-carriers preserve auto and residential insurance coverage in separate company subsidiaries to pocket auto income whereas ravenous our property market.

If legislators fail to behave, voters should use a citizen poll initiative to create a dynamic “pay-to-play” mandate. With this, the insurance coverage commissioner could be empowered to droop any insurance coverage group’s license to promote profitable auto insurance policies for so long as it refuses to write down owners insurance coverage for properties assembly goal, state-mandated fireplace protections like fire-resistant roofs, dual-pane home windows, mesh vents and brush clearance.

Entry to our 27 million drivers and $36-billion auto market is an enormous privilege. If insurers need to revenue off California drivers, the value of admission should embody stabilizing our housing market.
