To the editor: The time period that involves thoughts after studying this text is “cultural evolution” (“Los Angeles has one of the deadest downtowns in the world, according to a new survey,” June 13). Issues change over time. Combating to revive downtown to its pre-pandemic days can solely go to this point. It received’t be sufficient to draw folks again.
Los Angeles is a commuter metropolis, not like New York or different strolling cities recognized for his or her vibrancy. For instance, my spouse spent years commuting downtown each day till COVID modified that. Now working from residence, she is spared the stress of a two-hour round-trip drive, gasoline, insurance coverage, automobile upkeep, new workplace garments, parking charges and lunch bills. Now, she works in sweatpants and wears a sweater for on-line employees conferences.

To the editor: It was coincidental, if not providential, that I used to be within the metropolis of Chicago on the weekend this text was revealed. Chicago has been ranked “greatest large metropolis within the U.S.” by Condé Nast Traveler for the past nine years.
Strolling across the downtown/Loop areas, it was not laborious to see why: clear sidewalks and streets, no homeless individuals crowding walkways or panhandling, a bustling nightlife scene, environment friendly and seamless public transportation. It introduced again fond recollections of the way it was right here in Los Angeles.
