Washington, DC – The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has accused Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of betraying “American values” by saying that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

In a fundraising electronic mail to supporters on Thursday, AIPAC – one of the influential international coverage foyer teams in the US – likened Greene, a far-right legislator, to left-wing opponents of Israel.

“You count on anti-Israel smears from Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar,” the group mentioned, referring to Muslim-American Democratic congressmembers.

“However now, Marjorie Taylor Greene has joined their ranks – spouting the identical vile rhetoric and voting in opposition to the US-Israel alliance.”

Final week, Greene, an ally of US President Donald Trump, echoed the rising consensus of rights groups, teachers and United Nations consultants that Israel is finishing up a genocide in Gaza.

“It’s essentially the most truthful and best factor to say that Oct seventh in Israel was horrific and all hostages have to be returned, however so is the genocide, humanitarian disaster, and hunger occurring in Gaza,” the congresswoman wrote in a social media put up.

“Let’s name this what it’s: Marjorie Taylor Greene is the latest member of the anti-Israel Squad,” the group mentioned.

“She might imagine this earns her reward from the far-left or on-line radicals — however we see it for what it’s: a betrayal of American values and a harmful distortion of the reality.”

Greene’s current stances on Gaza stand in stark distinction together with her staunch early assist for Israel. In 2023, she led efforts to formally rebuke Tlaib – the one Palestinian American in Congress – over condemning Israeli insurance policies.

With criticism of Israel within the US largely coming from the progressive left, AIPAC hardly ever denounces members of Trump’s Republican Celebration.

However the foyer group mentioned on Thursday that it’s going to problem “lies” about Israel, whether or not they come from the “radical left or the novel proper”.

Though Trump has been uncompromising in his backing for Israel, a phase of his Republican base has been more and more essential of unconditional assist for the US ally, viewing the connection as incompatible with the president’s “America first” mantra.

    AIPAC spending

For many years, AIPAC has inspired its members to donate to candidates for public workplace, and in 2022, it began instantly spending tens of hundreds of thousands of {dollars} to defeat critics of Israel.

Final 12 months, AIPAC helped oust two incumbent progressive congressmembers, spending file quantities on election commercials.

AIPAC has not introduced plans to problem Greene in subsequent 12 months’s midterm elections.

In current weeks, AIPAC has been making an attempt to mitigate the rising outrage at Israel’s hunger coverage in Gaza, typically repeating false Israeli statements denying starvation within the territory and accusing Hamas of stealing the humanitarian assist.

Nevertheless, regardless of the group’s efforts, many congressmembers, together with some legislators who’ve been backed by AIPAC, have begun condemning Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

On Wednesday, Democratic Congresswoman Valerie Foushee, whom AIPAC helped elect to Congress in 2022 with $2m in marketing campaign spending, mentioned she was co-sponsoring a invoice to dam offensive weapons to Israel.

“We merely can’t proceed to offer the Israeli authorities with weapons when they don’t seem to be being utilized in accordance with international law to maximise the safety of civilians in Gaza,” Foushee wrote in a social media put up.
