Twelve former brokers with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful termination by the administration of US President Donald Trump for the act of taking a knee throughout racial justice protests in Washington DC, in 2020.

The lawsuit, filed in a US District Court docket on Monday, states that the brokers had been fired as a part of a politicised “marketing campaign of retribution” by the Trump administration over perceived sympathy for the protests, prompted by the police killing of George Floyd.

The brokers have mentioned that they kneeled throughout the protests as a way to de-escalate a tense scenario and that it was not meant as an act of political help. The controversy over their termination has introduced additional consideration to the Trump administration’s efforts to enact retribution towards perceived political enemies.

In latest months, federal prosecutors who labored on investigations into Trump have been fired, together with a federal employee who had an LGBTQ flag in his office.

The lawsuit states that Trump had attacked the brokers, 9 of whom are ladies, on social media earlier than returning to the White Home in 2024 and that FBI Director Kash Patel was intent on firing them, regardless of a earlier overview by FBI officers who concluded that the brokers had kneeled to assist ease tensions somewhat than as an act of help.

“Defendants focused plaintiffs particularly due to plaintiffs’ use of deescalation with civilians that defendants perceived versus, or in any other case not affiliated with, President Trump,” the lawsuit states.

It states that the brokers had encountered a hostile crowd and that by kneeling, they might have averted a “lethal confrontation” that “might have rivalled the Boston Bloodbath in 1770”, a reference to the taking pictures of protesters by British forces in Boston earlier than the American Revolution. In a photograph of the incident, nonetheless, brokers seem relaxed, with little indication of great danger.

Their termination letters accused the 12 workers of “unprofessional conduct and a scarcity of impartiality” and the “weaponisation” of the FBI.
