For example, the small Swiss firm Freesuns is contemplating increasing to the US.
Deborah Learoyd, Freesuns’ CEO and managing director, estimates that the corporate’s gross sales have grown 20–30% because it was established in 2019.
Typically, photo voltaic roof elements proceed to be manufactured in smaller batches. This limits the economies of scale and standardisation, although versatile manufacturing may assist considerably.
Learoyd says that whereas the unit prices for Freesuns’ merchandise are slowly reducing, “plenty of the fee is definitely the truth that each roof is a bit of bit completely different. And so it needs to be engineered a bit of bit in a different way, put in a bit of bit in a different way”.
Photo voltaic roofs usually require collaboration amongst roofers, photo voltaic installers and electricians. And constructing laws are usually extra advanced than for photo voltaic panels.
The extra time and paperwork can take a toll on a roofing enterprise, Collardson explains. “You attempt to put a roofer into the equation and so they’re going, ‘That is taking ceaselessly. I am shedding cash. I may have bought 10 roofing jobs within the time that it takes me to promote this one’.”
Collardson has to cost extra for restore of photo voltaic shingles, in comparison with a regular photovoltaic (PV) setup.
She explains, “With conventional photo voltaic, we usually have electronics on the panel and a map that exhibits us precisely how a lot every panel is producing.” So when one thing goes mistaken, it is easy to identify the place.
“With photo voltaic shingles, we do not actually get pleasure from that mapping; there is not any room beneath the shingle for the electronics.” Thermal cameras can establish the difficulty spots, nonetheless.
However then there’s the matter of accessing them. “You may take away the one in the midst of the array, however it’s important to stroll on the others, and you actually should not stroll on them as a result of you are going to create micro-fractures and that is going to trigger points down the street.”
Earlier than restore prices are factored in, a photo voltaic roof may cost a little twice as a lot as a system of photo voltaic panels mounted on a roof.
