    GENEVA: The pinnacle of the World Well being Organisation (WHO) on Monday (Could 19) urged nations to undertake this week the Pandemic Settlement, geared toward stopping a repeat of the COVID-19 disaster.

    WHO member states are holding their annual World Well being Meeting, a gathering of the UN well being company’s decision-making physique.

    “At this meeting, member states will think about, and hopefully undertake, the WHO Pandemic Settlement,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus mentioned in his opening handle to the gathering in Geneva.

    “That is actually a historic second.”

    After greater than three years of negotiations, the textual content of the settlement was finalised by consensus final month.

    The USA pulled out of the talks, following US President Donald Trump’s determination to set off the country’s one-year withdrawal process to leave the WHO.

    “Even in the midst of disaster, and within the face of great opposition, you labored tirelessly, you by no means gave up, and also you reached your objective,” mentioned Tedros.

    The hard-fought consensus spurred “pleasure, triumph, aid, exhaustion,” he mentioned.

    “I look ahead to your adoption of the settlement.”
