    US seizes Venezuela-linked, Russian-flagged oil tanker after weeks-long pursuit

    “The blockade of ‍sanctioned and illicit Venezuelan oil stays in FULL EFFECT – wherever ⁠in ‍the world,” US Protection Secretary Pete Hegseth stated in reply to that put up.

    Moscow slammed the US over the seizure of the tanker.

    “In accordance with the 1982 UN Conference on the Legislation of the Sea, freedom of navigation applies in waters on the excessive seas, and no state has the suitable to make use of pressure in opposition to vessels duly registered below the jurisdiction of different states,” Russia’s transport ministry stated in an announcement.

    The vessel had obtained “short-term permission” to sail below the Russian flag on Dec 24, the ministry stated, including that “contact with the ship was misplaced” after US naval forces boarded it “within the open sea, past the territorial waters of any state”.

    Two US officers, who have been talking on situation of anonymity, instructed Reuters that Wednesday’s operation close to Iceland was carried out by the US Coast Guard and US navy.

    The US Coast Guard didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.

    The officers stated Russian ⁠navy vessels have been within the normal neighborhood of the operation, together with a Russian submarine. It was unclear how shut the vessels have been to the operation, however there have been no indications of a confrontation between US and ‍Russian navy forces.

    There was no instant remark from Moscow. Nevertheless, Russian state media outlet RT revealed a picture of a helicopter hovering close to the ship.
