NEW YORK/WASHINGTON: US Lawyer Normal Pamela Bondi directed federal prosecutors to hunt the demise penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting and killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth Group’s insurance coverage division, in New York final 12 months.

In a press release, Mangione’s lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo referred to as the choice to hunt the demise penalty “barbaric.”

“Whereas claiming to guard towards homicide, the federal authorities strikes to commit the pre-meditated, state-sponsored homicide of Luigi,” Friedman Agnifilo mentioned.

Mangione, 26, has pleaded not responsible to New York state expenses of homicide as an act of terrorism and weapons offenses. He may face life in jail with out parole if convicted in that case. New York doesn’t have the demise penalty for state expenses.

Mangione faces a parallel federal indictment in Manhattan federal courtroom over Thompson’s killing. He may face the demise penalty if convicted in that case. He has not but been requested to enter a plea to the federal expenses.

If Mangione is convicted within the federal case, the jury would decide in a separate part of the trial whether or not to suggest the demise penalty. Any such suggestion have to be unanimous, and the decide can be required to impose it.

Thompson was shot useless on Dec 4 outdoors a Midtown Manhattan resort, the place the corporate was gathering for an investor convention.

“Luigi Mangione’s homicide of Brian Thompson – an harmless man and father of two younger kids – was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” Bondi mentioned in a press release.
