WASHINGTON: The US will impose a tariff of about 100 per cent on semiconductor chips imported into the country, President Donald Trump mentioned on Wednesday (Aug 6).

Trump advised reporters within the Oval Workplace that the brand new tariff charge would apply to “all chips and semiconductors coming into the USA”, however wouldn’t apply to firms that had made a dedication to fabricate in the USA.

“So 100 per cent tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the USA. However in case you’ve made a dedication to construct (within the US), or in case you’re within the technique of constructing (within the US), as many are, there is no such thing as a tariff,” Trump mentioned.

Demand for pc chips has been climbing worldwide, with gross sales growing 19.6 per cent within the year-ended in June, in accordance with the World Semiconductor Commerce Statistics organisation.

Trump’s tariff threats mark a major break from current plans to revive pc chip manufacturing in the USA. He’s selecting an strategy that favours the proverbial stick over carrots to be able to incentivise extra manufacturing.

Basically, the president is betting that increased chip prices would pressure most firms to open factories domestically, regardless of the chance that tariffs may squeeze company income and push up costs for cellphones, TVs and fridges.

Against this, the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act signed into legislation in 2022 by then-President Joe Biden supplied greater than US$50 billion to assist new pc chip vegetation, fund analysis and practice staff for the trade.

The combination of funding assist, tax credit and different monetary incentives was meant to attract in personal funding, a method that Trump has vocally opposed.
