GENEVA: The Worldwide Committee of the Crimson Cross (ICRC) mentioned on Sunday (Sep 21) it should co-host a world high-level assembly subsequent 12 months to “uphold humanity in battle”, at a time of rampant abuses of worldwide legislation in conflicts.

In a joint assertion alongside Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan and South Africa, the ICRC urged “states and the worldwide group to behave” to rein in widespread violations of worldwide humanitarian legislation.

“The world can not stand idly as the fundamental tenets of worldwide humanitarian legislation are routinely and intentionally being violated,” the assertion mentioned.

The ICRC launched an initiative a 12 months in the past with the six international locations geared toward galvanising political help for worldwide humanitarian legislation, or IHL.

“We had been pushed by a deep sense of accountability and urgency to behave decisively to stem the tide of violations of worldwide humanitarian legislation the world is witnessing,” the International IHL Initiative mentioned in Sunday’s assertion.

The initiative members mentioned they deliberate to “co-host a world high-level assembly to uphold humanity in battle in 2026”.

The assertion made no point out of particular conflicts of concern, saying it “speaks to all conflicts around the globe, addresses all related stakeholders, and seeks to make sure an excellent and common utility of IHL”.
