France wakened Sunday to devastated streets after clashes between police and protesters, mass looting and fires erupted nationwide as marches towards rising prices of dwelling degenerated into “excessive” violence.

The violence started on the sidelines of marches within the capital and different cities over the price of dwelling that the inside ministry stated have been attended by 550,000 individuals.

The CGT union, which took half, stated 800,000 individuals participated.

Police used tear fuel and water cannon towards protesters who threw projectiles and aimed fireworks.

A 17-year-old boy had his proper hand blown off by a crowd-control grenade within the southern metropolis of Saint-Etienne.

The violence has drawn international headlines – in america, Vice President JD Vance blamed immigration for the unrest.

“Western liberals imported the third world into France and different international locations within the title of range and compassion. They ignored basic questions of assimilation and compatibility,” he stated on X.

President Macron stated that “those that carried out vandalism, attacked administrative workplaces or companies, or carried out looting – even in our city halls, can be prosecuted and punished”.
