    COPENHAGEN: Negotiations between Denmark, Greenland and america on the Danish autonomous territory are making progress however a deal has but to be reached, Greenland’s prime minister mentioned on Tuesday (Could 12).

    The mineral-rich Arctic island is coveted by US President Donald Trump.

    “We’re negotiating however we do not have an settlement,” Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen mentioned in a speech to the Copenhagen Democracy Summit.

    “It is tough for me to be concrete in regards to the conversations within the working group however we now have taken some steps in the suitable route,” he mentioned.

    The US, which already has the Pituffik navy base in northern Greenland, desires to open three new bases within the south of the territory, based on media reviews.

    A 1951 defence pact, up to date in 2004, already permits Washington to ramp up troop deployments and navy installations on the island, offered it informs Denmark and Greenland prematurely.

    In January, Trump backed down from his repeated threats to grab Greenland, after which Copenhagen and Nuuk held a primary assembly in Washington.

    A working group was then established to debate the US place.

    Trump has repeatedly argued the US wants to regulate Greenland for causes of nationwide safety and has warned that if it does not take the huge Arctic island, China or Russia will.

    “We now have been prepared from the start and mentioned we’re able to do extra, take extra duty … by way of nationwide or worldwide safety,” Nielsen mentioned on Tuesday.

    “Our solely demand is respect.”

    The negotiations are being led by senior US State Division official Michael Needham, Danish ambassador to the US Jesper Moller Sorensen and Greenlandic diplomat Jacob Isbosethsen, based on the BBC.

    The working group has held 5 conferences since January, it mentioned.

    Denmark has been with no authorities since a basic election on Mar 24 that failed to offer both the left or proper bloc a majority.
