Letters to the Editor: Why Mayor Bass’ climate proposal is ‘a case of penny-wise, pound-foolish’

To the editor: Thanks in your article on Mayor Karen Bass’ puzzling proposal to close down the Local weather Emergency Mobilization Workplace, figuring out that local weather change is barely going to get steadily and predictably worse yearly (“Climate change is cooking Los Angeles. Does Karen Bass care?,” Might 1). We the folks don’t help Bass’ determination, that’s for certain.

In 2023, the Public Coverage Institute of California reported that 85% of Californians expressed concern about warmth waves, with the very best concern charges amongst respondents making lower than $40,000 a yr (89%). If it was a response to fiscal constraints, the proposal appears to me a case of penny-wise, pound-foolish. The local weather change-fueled Palisades and Eaton fires precipitated billions of {dollars} value of harm. I urge the Metropolis Council to say no to the proposal, forcing Bass to reorder her priorities.
