To the editor: Conflict within the Center East is heating up once more, with the ceasefire in peril over assaults from each U.S. and Iranian forces (“Fresh attacks in the gulf spark fears of renewed war with Iran,” Might 4). The final direct negotiations between the 2 nations have been a month in the past. It’s time to resume them, and this time, ship seasoned diplomats to barter a long-lasting peace quite than President Trump’s enterprise affiliate and son-in-law, neither of whom has the actual expertise — nor, it appears, aptitude — in such negotiations.
Whoever is distributed should have some latitude to have interaction in good-faith discussions about tips on how to finish the conflict. It appears counterproductive, and a bit unreasonable, to insist on a continued blockade of Iranian delivery whereas demanding that Iran enable unfettered transit by way of the Strait of Hormuz.
The time for bluster and threats is over. We must always give peace, and substantive negotiation by expert diplomats, an opportunity.
