To the editor: This text is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks kids face in their very own houses, and we should shield one another and our youngsters as a neighborhood (“L.A. County will pay $20 million to family of 4-year-old boy who was tortured, killed,” Sept. 30).

Nonetheless, the story is essentially coated from the attitude that the federal government, not the household or the neighborhood, failed the younger baby. The dad and mom of this little boy had a historical past of abuse, but nobody fought for him whereas he was alive. Nobody saved him from his dad and mom, not even his great-grandmother.

Whereas the lawsuit in opposition to the Division of Youngster and Household Companies is justified as a result of it was notified and has the authority to make these choices, the federal government isn’t the one useful resource obtainable. Persons are additionally a useful resource, household is a useful resource, and a neighborhood is a useful resource; we should be the individuals who may be counted on when our youngsters want us.
