To the editor: Are union actors value greater than a union crew?

The article concerning the Leisure Evergreen Fund being developed by Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Kathryn Barger highlights that “small movies shot domestically would imply extra roles” for SAG-AFTRA actors (“L.A. County weighs a grant fund to keep indie films from leaving,” Aug. 5). Do IATSE crews deserve any much less from town by which we dwell, vote and pay taxes?

IATSE, the union that represents below-the-line craftspeople, has low-budget contracts accessible for small-budget movies that afford union crew members a dwelling wage, healthcare and pension provisions. For administrators and producers who want artistic options for engaged on a restricted funds, there’s no substitute for an skilled, gifted union crew.

IATSE members are dropping houses and livelihoods, and wish the assistance of the county supervisors a minimum of SAG-AFTRA actors and struggling filmmakers. I hope the supervisors be certain that there are necessities within the laws to assist our leisure unions, which breathe life into the movie trade in Los Angeles.
