To the editor: Perhaps America isn’t falling aside. Perhaps we’re simply taking a look at it from too far-off.

That thought grew to become obvious after studying LZ Granderson’s account of touring throughout the nation (“My road trip revealed the good and the bad that hold America together,” Aug. 21). This summer time, I spent 30 days pedaling from Seattle to Washington as a part of the United States of Kindness, a motion encouraging People to do and doc acts of kindness. I acknowledged the America Granderson encountered, together with poverty, political divisions and locations that really feel forgotten. However my expertise left me considering much less about what divides America and extra about what holds it collectively.

In each interplay, we glimpsed the communities we handed via and the pockets of hope scattered throughout America. As soon as we began on the lookout for kindness, it appeared to be all over the place. Dinner with strangers. Invites into folks’s houses. A passerby ensuring we had sufficient water.

Individually, these moments gained’t repair America’s issues. Collectively, they remind us what can.
