To the editor: This op-ed beckoned me to return to a few of my worst reminiscences rising up in America (“No magic words will cure the racism that festers in America,” Oct. 23). Each came about within the South. One occurred on Aug. 28, 1955, and the opposite on Sept. 15, 1963.
The August date marks the brutal slaying of 14-year-old Emmett Until, who traveled from Chicago to see relations in Mississippi. His mom by no means noticed her baby alive once more.
The opposite date, which occurs to be my birthday, marks the homicide of 4 little ladies attending Sunday faculty in Birmingham, Ala.
Columnist LZ Granderson is on level. It’s the lack of worth positioned on Black life that will get filtered right down to our kids. How does one justify a 1-year-old being shot over stolen diapers? How does one clarify a drowning wherein the post-mortem discovered no water within the deceased’s lungs or abdomen? Through which there have been bruises on the again of his head?
I’ve spent virtually 80 years on this nation. Racism is alive and nicely. We will solely beat it again when all of us look towards one another as Individuals and never as others.
