To the editor: It’s with little bit of vanity that columnist Jonah Goldberg tells us how we must always react to AI coming to our neighborhoods (“The freak-out over AI data centers is creating a moral panic,” Aug. 25). If it was all no massive deal, the builders wouldn’t be doing it in secret, behind fences and skirting the foundations each time potential.

However, I’ll know that I’ve overreacted when dozens of fuel turbine turbines present up on the fairways at Mar-a-Lago as an alternative of another place the place the folks don’t have the cash or affect to cease it.

As for his conclusion that if we don’t cease being snowflakes China might be first, I want I knew what he means. First in income? Cultural influence? He leaves that to our creativeness as an alternative of letting us know why that may be such a poor consequence.

As a snowflake, I would really like a warning earlier than the local weather warming comes. We’re topic to melting, in spite of everything. The hazard is actual sufficient.

To the editor: AI is voracious in its want for large information facilities (“AI giants stay quiet on climate as California prepares to force disclosure,” Aug. 12). These facilities already have an effect on the environment in dangerous methods we’re solely now starting to understand. Billions of {dollars} of investor cash are pouring into this nascent trade in a near-hysterical race for untold income, so extra facilities are underway. Every consumes millions of gallons of water to chill itself. Requiring huge quantities of electrical energy to function, the technology of that power will load an enormous quantity of gases into our struggling environment.

Our planet is already drought-ridden and almost half of America is experiencing drought situations. Customers can now barely afford escalating utility payments as competitors for electrical energy explodes. Information facilities generate air and sound air pollution, and devour treasured open areas — however present few jobs to keep up them.

How can we enable this to proceed and drive our planet — and all of us alive on it — into environmental and existential disaster?
