To the editor: I used to be dismayed to learn that wolves are closely praying on cattle (“These wolves returned to California, but their eating habits have sparked alarm,” July 9). Whereas I can’t fault ranchers for objecting to the wolves, they might cut back the predation with the usage of guard canines. I’ve spoken to ranchers about this, and their typical response of “A canine may by no means struggle off a wolf” betrays an entire misunderstanding of the aim of guard canines.

They don’t must struggle off predators, they only must alert the herder of their presence by barking. The wolves attempt to sneak up on their prey. As soon as a guard canine begins barking at them, they depart to search out different prey. In Africa, folks efficiently use guard canines to guard their livestock from lions and hyenas.

To the editor: What number of hundreds of years now have people managed to lift their livestock as a part of their meals provide and, perhaps with the assistance of herders or working canines, maintain their livestock protected?

Nowadays, one would suppose that digital gadgets may substitute for herders or working canines. However it might merely be cheaper to kill the wolves, proper?
