To the editor: I used to be lucky to attend David Hockney’s eightieth birthday celebration on the Getty Middle in 2017 (“David Hockney, whose art celebrated sun-drenched Los Angeles, dead at 88,” June 12). Previous to an interview within the giant auditorium, Hockney quietly entered the room with a choice of his works, together with his iconic “Pearblossom Freeway” photograph collage. He sat throughout from it and I felt so fortunate to be there as he visited it, like two outdated associates, acquainted and content material to be collectively.

After the auditorium occasion — and a rousing refrain of “Completely happy Birthday” — Hockney returned to the exhibition rooms, the place he pulled out his smartphone and enthusiastically confirmed us pictures documenting his persevering with curiosity in reverse perspective.

By the best way, Hockney, a infamous chain smoker, was allowed to smoke onstage — the Getty provided a big ashtray and a safety individual simply offstage holding a big fireplace extinguisher!

These cigarettes have been no match for Hockney’s pleasure for dwelling, wanting and creating. He beloved L.A. and we beloved him again.
