To the editor: Earlier than town of Los Angeles distributes the recent spherical of funding for brand spanking new housing, a particular oversight committee must be created to watch and audit the bids from builders developing these tasks (“L.A. approves $466 million in affordable housing spending, the largest pool ever,” Sept. 23). It appears fairly uncertain that any metropolis council member and their employees and places of work have deep expertise with and information of the development trade.
These on this potential committee, together with different {qualifications}, would wish to have expertise in building plans, building bidding, procurement of constructing supplies and constructing methods. They need to have the ability to present a historical past of completed tasks and conduct price analyses of the bids. The funding have to be audited regularly to guard town’s funds.
The brand new items shouldn’t be luxurious nor, in fact, slum buildings. They need to be honorable and welcoming residing areas so the tenants are taken care of decently, and town’s funds are spent properly and never wasted.
