Sustained gunfire and explosions rang out throughout a number of areas of Niger’s capital, Niamey, early on Saturday, in accordance with two Reuters witnesses.
Pictures have been heard across the metropolis’s Diori Hamani Worldwide Airport, and close to the presidential palace, one witness stated.
“There have been exchanges of heavy gunfire. The taking pictures is continuous across the (presidential) palace,” the second witness stated
Niger has been dominated by the navy since a July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The navy authorities, led by Common Abdourahamane Tiani, has since turned away from conventional Western allies and cast nearer ties with Russia, mirroring military-led governments in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso.
Niger’s authorities was not instantly obtainable for remark, Reuters reported.
