    EU to take part in Trump’s Board of Peace but not as member

    BRUSSELS: The European Union will participate in this week’s inaugural meeting of United States President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, however a spokesman insisted on Monday (Feb 16) that Brussels wouldn’t be becoming a member of as a member.

    The European commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica, will head to Washington to symbolize the EU on the assembly on Thursday.

    “She’s going to take part within the assembly of the Board of Peace for the precise half devoted to Gaza. Let me stress that the European Fee, it isn’t changing into a member to the Board of Peace,” EU spokesman Guillaume Mercier mentioned.

    He added the EU govt was taking part as a part of its “long-standing dedication” to the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire and “to help the reconstruction and the post-recovery in Gaza”, he added.

    The Board of Peace, of which Trump is the chairman, was initially designed to supervise the Gaza truce and reconstruction after the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

    However its goal has since morphed into resolving all types of worldwide conflicts, triggering fears that the US president needs to create a rival to the UN.

    Some EU member states have raised considerations concerning the board.

    “We nonetheless have various questions relating to a number of components within the Board of Peace: one regarding its scope, two regarding its governance, and three, its compatibility with the UN Constitution,” EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni mentioned.
