To the editor: Columnist Gustavo Arellano proclaims that language proficiency in truck drivers doesn’t have an effect on security (“Trump is wrong. My dad was a trucker, and he didn’t need much English to do his job,” Could 7). I disagree; I’ve acquired quite a few site visitors citations in Europe as a result of I didn’t perceive European street indicators.

Additionally, Arellano conveniently cites information from the Federal Motor Service Security Administration that the speed of deadly crashes is thrice lower than within the Nineteen Seventies. He doesn’t, nevertheless, cite the newer statistics from the National Security Council, which in 2022 confirmed a 49% improve in deadly crashes involving massive vehicles over the earlier decade.

    ..

To the editor: I say “bravo” to the remark by Arellano’s dad: “The one who doesn’t converse English works tougher.” Initially from Chihuahua, Mexico, my pricey mother, along with her restricted English abilities, nonetheless managed to work and reside fortunately in Texas, California and Illinois. She was at all times surrounded by church buddies, retailers and members of the family who predominantly spoke Spanish. She by no means complained or felt misplaced for not totally understanding English.

That is America, a rustic of immigrants from all components of the world. There are different ethnic communities within the U.S. the place their U.S. and foreign-born residents predominantly converse their native languages, and nobody questions them. Maybe as People, we’d be a greater and closer-knit nation if extra of us discovered a second language. I extremely suggest Español.

    ..

To the editor: It appears that evidently the perfect technique for minimizing the variety of trucker-involved accidents is much less about making certain English-language proficiency and extra about having fewer huge rigs on the street.

Towards that objective, the Trump administration has adopted the proper mixture of insurance policies. As our ports are slowing down resulting from excessive tariffs, there might be far fewer vehicles touring to and from cities like Lengthy Seaside. Immigration polices, too, may imply much less produce to maneuver to markets resulting from pickers being afraid to go to work, resulting in much less truck site visitors to and from the Central Valley. Downside solved!
