    US considers buying Chagos Islands: Report

    The White Home is contemplating a plan to purchase the Chagos Islands from Mauritius, the Telegraph reported on Sunday (Jun 7).

    US officers have drawn up a proposal to bypass the UK and make their very own deal to take management of Diego Garcia, the report mentioned. 

    The plan is amongst a number of choices being drafted by the White Home, in a paper aimed toward offering options to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ceding sovereignty of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius, the report mentioned.

    “President Trump has been constant in his place that the UK shouldn’t give away the British Indian Ocean Territory, which incorporates our joint US-UK navy facility on the Diego Garcia atoll,” a US official advised Reuters.

    “Diego Garcia’s strategic location within the Indian Ocean makes it an important and indispensable navy set up of serious significance to the nationwide safety of the US,” the official mentioned, including the US stays in common discussions with Britain to protect the island’s viability as a regional safety platform.

    Britain’s authorities in April placed on maintain its deal to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, residence to the US-British Diego Garcia air base, which has been criticised by Trump.
