Louisiana lawmakers on Friday accepted a brand new congressional map that would enable Republicans to flip one of many state’s two Democratic-held Home seats within the 2026 midterms.

The Louisiana Senate gave closing approval to a invoice with the brand new map after a lot dissent from Democrats.

“Y’all, firstly of this course of, I might have mentioned that we’re constructing a home on a damaged basis. Now, it feels extra like quicksand, as a result of we’re in 2026 going right into a map that we all know is flawed, that we all know goes to get struck down,” state Sen. Royce Duplessis, a Democrat, mentioned on the Senate flooring.

State Sen. Jay Morris, a Republican, defended the map forward of the ultimate vote.

“I believe now we have a map right here that meets all the normal redistricting standards. It isn’t racially gerrymandered. … I believe it broadly permits for illustration for every area of the state, and it is very reasonable, and we should always approve it,” Morris mentioned.

The brand new map comes weeks after U.S. Supreme Courtroom struck down the state’s present map as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

The landmark Supreme Courtroom resolution dealt a blow to Part 2 of the Voting Rights Act and set off a newfound scramble of mid-decade redistricting in Louisiana and different states that Democrats say might drastically scale back the variety of Black representatives in Congress.

Rep. Edmond Jordan, D-Dist. 29, heart, seems to be up after a redistricting plan to get rid of a majority-Black congressional district, in response to a U.S. Supreme Courtroom ruling, was handed by the Home in Baton Rouge, La., Might 28, 2026.

On Thursday, throughout hours of flooring debate, a number of Democratic state representatives condemned the redrawn map, which eliminates one of many two majority-Black districts within the state, as discriminatory.

“I need to ask you to recollect the argument that we should always now be colorblind a few congressional map, on this state of all states, requires forgetting a amount of historical past that I do not imagine any of us has the fitting to overlook. Black folks on this nation weren’t residents; not partial residents, not second-class residents. We weren’t residents in any respect,” state Rep. Kyle Inexperienced, a Democrat and member of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, mentioned on Thursday.

State Rep. Beau Beaullieu, a Republican who sponsored an amended model of the map that the state Home accepted, argued to members that legislators had been pressured to redraw the map due to the Supreme Courtroom’s ruling.

“And now we discover ourselves again with the same map to the one this physique handed in 2022, that had 5 Republican districts and one Democrat district,” he mentioned on Thursday. “The map complies with conventional redistricting rules and in addition maximizes partisan benefit. The map is contiguous; it’s compact; it binds communities of curiosity; it protects incumbency. … Race was not an element when drawing these districts.”
