    US, Israel criticise UN staff over Gaza war stance amid protests, documents show

    GENEVA: America and Israel have despatched criticism letters to senior United Nations officers questioning their employees’s impartiality over the Gaza war, paperwork confirmed on Thursday (Sep 18), as a whole lot of UN staff protested outdoors the organisation’s European headquarters.

    Workers carried placards saying “Peace for Gaza” and “Not a Goal”. They laid greater than 370 white roses beside a memorial plaque in Geneva to signify every UN assist employee killed within the practically two-year conflict.

    “Right now, the UN employees are coming collectively to say that sufficient is sufficient, to say that we can not kill our colleagues in Gaza with such impunity and to say cease to all these murders,” stated Nathalie Meynet, president of the UN refugee company employees council.

    The letters spotlight rising tensions between the UN and its greatest funder, the US, which has already withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council over what Washington calls its anti-Israel stance.

    A parallel vigil at UN headquarters in New York was denied permission to proceed by administration, in response to a message seen by Reuters.

    UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated there have been “guidelines and rules for workers to interact in actions outdoors of their regular actions which generally should be utilized”.

    ISRAEL DENOUNCES EVENT

    Israel’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva Daniel Meron denounced the Geneva protest in a Sep 10 letter to Tatiana Valovaya, director-general of the UN’s Geneva workplace.

    “UN employees will not be activists or political actors. Those that incite and take part in such politically charged actions ought to face disciplinary measures, together with suspension,” the letter stated.

    Séverine Deboos, one of many organisers, denied the protest was political. “The message is in honour of our colleagues in Gaza and to thank them,” she stated.

    Israel says it takes care to keep away from civilian deaths in its conflict with Hamas.
