To the editor: Advertising govt Andrea Javor tells us in her pro-marketing op-ed that we shouldn’t blame Sydney Sweeney for the Novig advert (“Sydney Sweeney isn’t bringing back sexist advertising — women are,” Sept. 18). We weren’t born yesterday; we all know the accountability for this advert lies with the individuals in Javor’s trade, not Sweeney. We additionally know that ladies are to not blame for this advert any greater than girls are in charge for the heavy reliance on sexploitation of our pictures in promoting all through my whole lifetime, which is now clocking at 68 years.
Javor goes on to accuse girls who protest exploitative promoting of “kicking the door shut” on some daring new fantasy world during which sexism is not a component and parcel of promoting. There isn’t any logic so confounding as that in terms of a wealthy, highly effective and culpable trade. She warns us to cease taking the bait, slightly than admitting the legal responsibility lies with these dangling bait that reinforces a vulgar and harmful aspect of patriarchy.
Perhaps it’s time for advertisers to think about the toll on girls in the best way of rape, homicide and home violence earlier than dangling extra irresistable bait for girls to lunge at.
