    Firefighters in Greece struggle to save coastal resort as winds rage

    PORTO GERMENO: Tons of of firefighters in Greece on Saturday (Aug 1) have been battling to save lots of a preferred coastal resort northwest of Athens as violent winds lashed the nation, hampering operations.

    Greater than 400 firefighters, backed by a number of dozen specialised plane, have been battling blazes within the space of Porto Germeno, some 70km northwest of Athens, the hearth division stated.

    The hearth broke out Friday close to the neighbouring coastal village of Agios Vasileios. Residents initially ignored a civil safety name to evacuate, and a few 300 individuals needed to be rescued by sea.

    As much as 150 properties in Porto Germeno are believed to have been broken by the hearth, Dimitris Pagonis, a senior civil safety official from the close by city of Mandra, instructed Skai TV.

    Contained in the city, a middle-aged volunteer instructed AFP that nobody was coordinating the response.

    “Nobody is managing the scenario … there are homes that have not burned but … animals that should be rescued … however there is not any one right here to inform us whether or not we are able to go in or not,” stated Costas Liberopoulos.
