    Trump says ‘no extensions’ to Aug 1 tariff deadline

    WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump mentioned on Tuesday (Jul 8) that he wouldn’t lengthen an Aug 1 deadline for higher US tariffs to take effect on dozens of economies, a day after he appeared to sign flexibility on the date.

    Whereas Trump imposed a sweeping 10 per cent tariff on items from nearly all buying and selling companions in April, increased charges customised to dozens of economies had been unveiled, then halted till Jul 9.

    However the president this week once more delayed their reimposition, pushing it again to Aug 1.

    Trump insisted that there can be no additional delay within the tariffs. “There can be no change,” he posted on Fact Social.

    He added that levies would begin being paid on Aug 1, in keeping with letters now being despatched out to buying and selling companions.

    “No extensions can be granted,” Trump mentioned.

    On Monday evening, Trump had instructed reporters at a dinner that the Aug 1 deadline was “agency, however not 100 per cent agency.”

    Pressed on whether or not the letters had been his closing provide, Trump replied: “I’d say closing – but when they name with a unique provide, and I prefer it, then we’ll do it.”

    In a push for additional commerce offers, Trump sent letters to more than a dozen partners on Monday, together with key US allies Japan and South Korea.

    Merchandise from each nations can be hit with 25 per cent duties, Trump wrote in near-identical letters to leaders in Tokyo and Seoul.

    Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, South Africa and Malaysia had been amongst different nations dealing with duties starting from 25 per cent to 40 per cent.
