    MEITAR, Israel: A whole bunch of tearful mourners packed a stadium in southern Israel on Wednesday (Jan 28) for the funeral of Ran Gvili, the final Gaza hostage whose burial marks the top of a painful nationwide saga triggered by Hamas’s 2023 assault.

    Israeli forces on Monday brought home the remains of Gvili, who was killed in motion and whose physique Palestinian militants took into Gaza throughout their Oct 7 assault, which triggered a devastating two-year battle.

    A big banner bearing the portrait of Gvili hung in a stadium within the city of Meitar, the 24-year-old police officer’s hometown and the place he will likely be laid to relaxation.

    In entrance of the sombre crowd, which included tearful members of the family, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, Gvili’s coffin lay draped in an Israeli flag.

    “I hoped you’ll come again by yourself two toes, and that gave me energy,” stated his mom Talik Gvili, who described her son as “the primary to depart, final to return.”

    “For 2 years and 4 months, we talked about you consistently, and also you grew to become everybody’s baby,” she added.

    “Rani, you’re with me on a regular basis.”

    Herzog hailed the return of his stays however stated he may solely remorse not having identified Gvili whereas he was alive.
