To the editor: After she was groped in public, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated, “In the event that they do that to the president, what should occur to all of the younger girls within the nation?” Certainly, and it’s not simply in Mexico and it’s not simply younger girls; it’s women and older girls internationally, too (“Mexico’s president was groped on the street. Now she’s waging a war against rampant sexual harassment,” Nov. 5).

What must occur is a multi-pronged strategy to ending this sort of violence globally. Prevention applications must be delivered to all boys in grade faculty by means of highschool, in addition to implementing present legal guidelines towards the perpetrators.

The White Ribbon Campaign, developed in Canada, gives a framework for educating boys about supporting girls’s and women’ rights, and must be a part of the varsity curriculum each right here and in Mexico.

MIA, Mujeres Iniciando en Las Americas is a California-based nonprofit group that gives training primarily based on the White Ribbon Marketing campaign. It reaches out to elementary colleges, center colleges and universities in Guatemala to assist stem the tide of sexual violence towards girls there. These are the sorts of applications we have to see develop throughout Mexico, the U.S. and all over the world.

To the editor: It’s terrifying to assume that even essentially the most highly effective lady in Mexico would expertise what many ladies face of their lives in coping with sexual harassment. You’d assume that that presence of president-level safety and witnesses would forestall any undesirable sexual advances.

The truth is that ladies expertise sexual harassment and assault on a regular basis. How is it that no lady is exempt from the chance of being sexually harassed?

Extra insurance policies should be enacted that place better repercussions on the perpetrators of sexual harassment. If aggressors see a possible threat, they are going to be extra inclined to cease. Plus, better criminalization of sexual harassment will take away from the normalization of the conduct.

Specializing in shifting the conduct of the aggressor, slightly than discovering methods for ladies to defend themselves, will assist set up new norms for a greater and safer future.
