To the editor: Gov. Gavin Newsom has fallen again into good graces with me, regardless of his latest foray into the MAGA podcast world (“Bucking Trump tariffs, California will push to maintain global trade independently, Newsom says,” April 4). His determination to publicly search financial partnerships with different nations amid the president’s order to impose damaging and unprovoked tariffs on all nations, good friend or foe, is a welcome signal of displaying some spine.
California’s financial system, like a lot of the nation, is deeply reliant on worldwide commerce and commerce, so it’s encouraging that Newson understands the stakes of the second. Other than the challenges or limitations of some financial measures sponsored by a state that may be legally or virtually pursued, Newsom is displaying us that you just don’t must bend the knee to authentically serve your constituencies. The pushback is overdue.

To the editor: Trump’s tariff fiasco shouldn’t be regulation; it has been created by presidential decree. Till and except Congress enacts his nationwide tariff coverage, I see no purpose why states’ rights — a standard GOP speaking level — shouldn’t apply to the Golden State now.
