To the editor: I acknowledge and recognize the factors that columnists Anita Chabria and Mark Z. Barabak expressed of their latest commentary (“America tried something new in 2025. It’s not going well,” Dec. 28). Whereas I’ve a sure diploma of settlement, I query if they’re overlooking an necessary issue.

President Trump is a talented orator and an incredible salesperson, a la P.T. Barnum. Like many nice salespeople, fact isn’t at all times a significant consideration. However we already knew Trump wasn’t essentially the most trustworthy president; in spite of everything, the Washington Post counted 30,573 false or deceptive claims throughout his first time period.

To me, we ought to be specializing in the Republican Celebration. Their assist and lack of braveness have allowed the assaults on democracy to achieve success.

I’m not anti-Republican and imagine that for democracy to live on, we want a two-party system. However the Republican Celebration at the moment isn’t the Republican Celebration of many nice earlier Republican leaders. The Republican Celebration of at the moment represents Trump solely.

Our democracy was arrange so that everybody might have an equal say. Every state is totally different and all have their strengths and weaknesses. However the Congress of the US was made to compromise for the great of all. Through the years, there have been far left-wing and much right-wing politics that haven’t been profitable as a result of they solely serve their very own slim viewpoints.

We should get collectively and do not forget that, good and unhealthy, we’re all on this collectively. Compromise, consideration and steadiness is the fiber for the greatness of our democracy.

    Walter Oliver, Santa Paula
