TOKYO: Japan scrambled jets in response to Chinese language drones 30 instances through the previous yr, the army stated, up over threefold year-on-year as Beijing bolsters its air drive.

“Total, we’re seeing the pattern staying at a excessive degree,” Japan’s army chief of workers Yoshihide Yoshida stated at a press convention on Thursday (Apr 10).

Within the monetary yr to Mar 31, Japan scrambled fighter jets 704 instances to intercept overseas plane.

Of these, 464 – or 66 per cent – had been for plane or drones which are identified or believed to be from China, Japan’s Joint Employees stated, down barely from 479 instances in 2023-24.

Of the incoming Chinese language plane, 30 had been drones – up from 9 seen within the earlier yr.

Russian plane accounted for almost all the remainder, or 237 instances, a bounce from 174 instances the earlier yr.

Russian and Chinese warships held joint drills in the Sea of Japan in September, a part of a naval train that Russian President Vladimir Putin stated was the biggest of its sort in three a long time.

The vast majority of the Chinese language flights in 2024-25 were in waters around Taiwan and the neighbouring Japanese area of Okinawa, Japan’s Joint Employees stated.

Beijing has ramped up stress on self-ruled Taiwan in recent times and held army drills that analysts see as preludes to a potential future takeover of the self-ruled island.
