Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister and the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) called the BJP a ‘High Loaded Virus Party’ on Wednesday, claiming that the Central government had tapped her phone with the help of Pegasus.
Mamata requested the Supreme Court (SC) to take Suo moto cognizance against anyone engaged in phone tapping or spying on judges, ministers, political leaders, journalists, and others while speaking virtually at the TMC’s annual Martyrs’ Day rally (Ekusey July) from her Kalighat residence in South Kolkata.
“Sir, please accept my humble request… Please take Suo moto cognizance of this case against the Centre because judges’ phones were also tapped,” Mamata said with the Supreme Court.
She emphasized the need for opposition party leaders working together to prevent the BJP from regaining power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, saying, “I don’t know what will happen in 2024, but we have to start planning for it now.”
Our phones are being tapped by them (actually referring to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi). I put a tape on its (mobile phone) camera since Pegasus is harmful, as you can see (when flashing her phone). I’d want to ask senior leaders like Sharad Pawarji to convene a gathering (of Opposition leaders) in Delhi because I’ll be there from July 27 to July 29.”
“We can’t afford to squander time, and we need to start working against the BJP now,” she stated, referring to the 2024 elections. Because of the BJP government at the Centre, ‘freedom is at risk’. I’d want to remind them that once again there will be a game. For the sake of the country and its people, we must band together right now.”
‘Shahid Divas’ was in its 28th year. On July 21, 1993, 13 workers were killed after police opened fire on them at a rally on Mayo Road in Kolkata. It was commemorated to honor the martyrdom of the 13 political activists, as well as other martyrs executed during the Left Front’s reign of terror.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, Mirzapur, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Azamgarh Mamata’s speech was broadcast live virtually.
In Gujarat, Tripura, Delhi, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu, her speech was broadcast live on television. Hundreds of large screens have been placed at key junctions in West Bengal and other states so that people may watch and listen to Mamata Banerjee.
During the virtual rallies held at Delhi’s Constitution Club, many influential and important Opposition leaders such as NCP Chief Sharad Pawar, Congress leader P Chidambaram, Digvijaya Singh (Congress), Supriya Sule (NCP), Ram Gopal Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Jaya Bachchan (Samajwadi Party), Keshav Rao (TRS), Sanjay Singh (AAP), Manoj Jha (Rjd)
