To the editor: I served as a metropolis councilmember in West Hollywood for a few years. It was at all times my mantra that the general public would assist advocacy on the big-picture points so long as I took care of the fundamental service points that affected their day by day lives — on their road and of their neighborhood. (“How governable is Los Angeles?” Opinion, Jan. 22)

If the streets in your neighborhood are poorly maintained, if emergency providers are sluggish to reply, and if parks and public areas are soiled and unsafe, then the general public gained’t respect or assist specializing in main state and nationwide points comparable to local weather change. In the event that they suppose you’re taking good care of the enterprise that almost all immediately impacts them, they’ll enable a bit of extra latitude.

    Jeff Prang, Los Angeles

The author is the elected assessor of Los Angeles County.
