    IAEA issues Ukraine nuclear plant warning after Russia alleges Zaporizhzhia attack

    LONDON — The chief of the Worldwide Atomic Power Company on Saturday expressed “severe concern” after Moscow accused Ukrainian forces of launching a drone assault on the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Energy Plant in southern Ukraine — an allegation that Kyiv denied.

    The incident could be the primary drone assault inside the ZNPP perimeter since April 2024, the IAEA mentioned in an announcement posted to X. Russian forces captured the positioning within the opening days of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. The ability now sits round 30 miles from the closest portion of the entrance line.

    “The IAEA has been knowledgeable by the ZNPP {that a} drone in the present day struck a turbine constructing on the web site, reportedly inflicting a gap in its wall,” the company mentioned in its assertion.

    Grossi warned that “attacking nuclear websites is like enjoying with fireplace,” the IAEA wrote, including that it requested “entry to look at the affected turbine constructing first-hand.”

    Ukraine’s Southern Protection Forces — a navy grouping which oversees the southern entrance — denied the Russian allegation and accused Moscow of participating in “nuclear terrorism.”

    “The Russian Federation continues to make use of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Energy Plant as a instrument of nuclear blackmail and knowledge provocations.     Ukraine’s Overseas Ministry, in the meantime, issued an announcement describing the Russian stories as “baseless accusations.”
