To the editor: Events of drivers exceeding native pace limits dropped practically 80% after San Francisco put in pace cameras, and now Los Angeles is putting in 125 cameras of its personal in areas vulnerable to speeders (“Speed cameras worked in San Francisco. Now they are coming to L.A. — with hefty fines,” April 29).

The conclusion this text attracts is that drivers are altering their conduct because of the presence of the cameras. I’m questioning, nevertheless, if their conduct is actually altering, or if they’re complying simply sufficient to keep away from getting caught and cited slightly than slowing down for security’s sake. I suppose in both case, if the cameras save lives (which has already been proved), the the reason why the speeders decelerate are secondary so long as they do drive slower.

With all of the latest rhetoric and notoriety concerning AI and what it may possibly do for us, why not improve the brand new pace cameras by enabling them to catch and {photograph} drivers who’re continuously working crimson lights and texting on their telephones, thereby changing into gravely distracted? They may name them “DRS cameras” for catching distracted drivers, red-light runners and speeders.

It’s truly type of unhappy that we have to create so many legal guidelines and enforcement choices simply to forestall folks from killing others on the streets and highways that we frequent so typically. Too many neglect that driving is a privilege, not a proper.
