Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales introduced Monday that he’s stepping down from Congress when it returns on Tuesday amid threats to expel him over an affair with a staffer.
In a press release on X, Gonzales wrote, “There’s a season for the whole lot and God has a plan for us all. When Congress returns tomorrow, I’ll file my retirement from workplace. It has been my privilege to serve the good individuals of Texas.”
Earlier this yr, Gonzales introduced he wouldn’t run for re-election after admitting to an affair with a staffer who later died by suicide.
