TEHRAN: The US navy stated it could start a blockade of all Iranian ports on Monday (Apr 13), after talks between the warring sides in Pakistan collapsed with President Donald Trump blaming the Islamic republic’s refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

“The blockade will likely be enforced impartially towards vessels of all nations coming into or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, together with all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” US Central Command stated in a press release, including it could start at 1400 GMT (10pm, Singapore time) on Monday.

US forces wouldn’t impede vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports, it added.

Trump on his Fact Social platform confirmed the US navy’s assertion, a extra restricted operation than envisaged in his earlier publish that asserted all ships trying to enter or exit the strait would be blocked.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had warned earlier than the US navy announcement that they’d full management of site visitors by Hormuz and would lure any challenger “in a lethal vortex”.

In his prolonged social media publish, Trump stated on Sunday his aim was to clear the strait of mines and reopen it to all transport and that Iran should not be allowed to revenue from controlling the waterway.

“Efficient instantly, the US Navy, the Best within the World, will start the method of BLOCKADING any and all Ships making an attempt to enter, or depart, the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump stated. “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceable vessels, will likely be BLOWN TO HELL!”

Oil costs – which tumbled final week after the momentary ceasefire – jumped round eight per cent Monday, with each key WTI and Brent contracts topping US$100 a barrel.

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who led Tehran’s delegation in Pakistan, stated Tehran would “not bow to any threats” from Washington, whereas navy chief Shahram Irani known as Trump’s blockade risk “ridiculous”.

After the highest-level US-Iran talks because the 1979 Islamic Revolution did not ship a deal, Iranian overseas ministry Abbas Araghchi blamed “maximalism, shifting goalposts, and (a) blockade” that prevented an settlement he stated they have been “simply inches away from”.
