SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel mentioned the U.S. has no legitimate purpose to hold out a navy assault towards the island or to try to depose him.

Talking in an interview on NBC Information’ Meet the Press program, the president mentioned an invasion of Cuba can be expensive and have an effect on regional safety. However ought to it occur, Díaz-Canel mentioned, Cubans would defend themselves.

“If the time comes, I don’t assume there can be any justification for the US to launch a navy aggression towards Cuba, or for the U.S. to undertake a surgical treatment or the kidnapping of a president,” Díaz-Canel mentioned, talking by means of a translator.

He added: “If that occurs, there shall be preventing, and there shall be a battle, and we are going to defend ourselves, and if we have to die, we’ll die, as a result of as our nationwide anthem says, ‘Dying for the homeland is to reside’.”

His feedback come as tensions between Cuba and the U.S. stay excessive regardless of each side acknowledging talks, though no particulars have been shared.

Díaz-Canel has accused the U.S. authorities of implementing a “hostile coverage” towards Cuba and mentioned it has “no ethical to demand something from Cuba.” He famous that Cuba is fascinated about participating in dialogue and discussing any subject with out circumstances, “not demanding modifications from our political system as we’re not demanding change from the American system, about which we’ve numerous doubts.”

Cuba blames a U.S. power blockade for its deepening woes, with an absence of petroleum affecting the island’s well being system, public transportation and the manufacturing of products and companies.

Cuba produces solely 40% of the gas it consumes, and it stopped receiving key oil shipments from Venezuela after the U.S. navy attacked the South American nation in early January, seized President Nicolás Maduro and took him to New York to face drug trafficking fees. Then, with cooperation from ruling party leaders, the Trump administration started implementing a phased plan to finish Venezuela’s entrenched disaster.

The arrival of a Russian tanker carrying 730,000 barrels of crude oil in Cuba in March marked the island’s first oil cargo in three months. Russia has promised to ship a second tanker.

Regardless of threatening tariffs in January on international locations that promote or present oil to Cuba, the Trump administration allowed the tanker to proceed.

“Cuba’s completed,” President Donald Trump mentioned on the time. “They’ve a nasty regime. They’ve very unhealthy and corrupt management and whether or not or not they get a ship of oil, it’s not going to matter.”

Díaz-Canel mentioned his authorities takes Trump’s phrases as a warning.

“You hear that Cuba is subsequent, that Cuba goes to be subsequent, that there are, there’s a approach out, that they’re going to take over Cuba,” he mentioned. “So, from the place of duty throughout the management of the nation, that may be a warning. And we have to responsibly defend our folks, defend our venture and defend our nation.”
